The new French Ambassdor for Malta Monsieur Michel Vandepoorter has paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Victoria in his first visit to the island of Gozo.  They discussed stronger relations between Malta and France through local councils and possible twinning between Victoria and a French city.

The Victoria Local Council would like to announce that it has ranked first in the Local Council’s Category at the National Enterprise Support Awards with its Grand Tour of Taste 2011, Serata di Gola and Dopo teatro con gli Chef project. The Council was also nominated for the European Enterprise Promotion Awards 2012 to be held in Cyprus later on this year.

This innovative project was embarked by the Victoria Local Council together with the Arena del Sole Theatre in Bologna with the aim of exploring Gozitan culture through food, heritage and culinary delights. The discovery and promotion of this unexplored sector on the island was achieved through a journey of a group of popular Italian journalists accompanied by top Italian chefs all the way from Bologna to Gozo in prestigious cars. Through this Grand Tour of Taste that culminated on the island of Gozo and later the Serata di Gola, for which prominent people from Bologna participate, widespread publicity about the island of Gozo took place around Italy in a number of popular periodicals, newspaper, television and other media channels.

Minister Dr Jason Azzopardi presented these awards to the Mayor of Victoria Dr Samuel Azzopardi.

The Victoria Local Council would like to thank all those that have contributed for the success of this project.

Din l-iskoperta u l-promozzjoni ta’ settur mhux tant magħruf tal- gżira ġiet milħuqa permezz ta’grupp rinomat ta’ ġurnalisti Taljani akkumpanjati minn fost l-aqwa chefs Taljani li ġew Għawdex minn Bologna isuqu karozzi prestiġjużi. Permezz tal-Grand Tour of Taste li kkulmina f’Għawdex u iktar tard permezz tas- Serata di Gola li għalija attendew numru ta’ nies importanti u prominenti minn Bologna kien hemm pubbliċita kbira għal Għawdex fl-Italja kollha f’numru ta’ stazzjonijiet televiżi, gurnali, magazines u oqsma oħra tal-media.

Working on a formula which seems to have worked so well in the past years, this Eastertime festival opens and ends with performances by the Gaulitanus Choir itself. The opening concert is indeed a sacred one (appropriately scheduled in Lent), during which the choir and its soloists will present a number of sacred works - which, to give homogeinity to the programme are all in English. Pride of place is given to Benjamin Harlan’s cantata “Easter Trilogy” which will be premiered in the Maltese islands. On the other hand the finale is a completely contrasting concert where the choir will present semi-acted versions of two popular musical shows: Richard Rodgers’ “The King and I” and Lionel Bart’s “Oliver!” (the latter specifically chosen to celebrate Dickens’ bicentary). This finale, in which the choir will also be joined by guest foreign soloists, will be produced by choir member Terry Shaw, an expert in this field.

In between several other recitals will be held, featuring choirs, solo singers, string and brass chamber ensembles and a number of pianists. The events are multifarious and range from the typical concert-fare to a quasi-reflective spiritual event during Holy Week and to an open-air busking session. Typically, the festival not only presents established performers but also gives some space to up-and-coming talent. Moerover the festival is out-reaching and is held in various localities throughout Gozo. Indeed, besides the enhancement of Gozo’s cultural milieu and its promotion on an international scale, the festival aims to boost Gozo’s Gozo’s touristic appeal – internal and otherwise – during a period which is rather lean and to impart the educational and social aspects of the arts to the whole spectrum of the population including children. And it is the Gaulitanus Choir’s intention that this festival keeps gradually developing, always reaching higher standards.

It is with specifically because of this that the choir is finding the backing of government agencies, local councils, hotels and corporate bodies which help it keep going on with its initiative. Thus this edition of the festival is being supported by the Ministry for Gozo, the Ministry for Justice, Dialogue and the Family, the Gozo Council for Culture & Arts, the Victoria, Xaghra and Xewkija Local Councils, Michael Grech Financial Investment Services, the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz and the JDB Digital Printing.

English Version:

The Rabat Citta’ Victoria Local Council would like to inform the general public that it was never its intention or was it ever discussed in council that the upper part of Republic Street from cross roads to Savina Square be pedestrianised. The Council has never submitted any request to any competent authority to this effect.

While the Council is in principle in favour of more pedestrian zones in Gozo, the Council believes that if the upper part of Republic Street and Savina Square are closed for traffic, the negative effects will outweigh the positive ones.

Thereby the Council would like to affirm its position against the closure of the above mentioned streets for traffic.

The Council has also checked with the Ministry for Gozo and Transport Malta and they both confirmed that they have recieved no requests to this effect.
