Dr Samuel Azzopardi, the Mayor of Victoria, has been elected as President of the Region of Gozo and a member of the executive of the Local Councils Association on Saturday 10th October 2009. After extensive reforms by the central government, as President amongst other tasks, he will be heading the regional committee and the regional office for Gozo due to open next January.

Dr Azzopardi has contested the election as a PN candidate. The other contestant is also a Victoria councillor Joseph Debrincat who contested as a PL candidate. The Council whilst wishing the Mayor the best of success in this new venture, feels honoured that both party candidates hailed from the Victoria Local Council.
